Garbage is a relative term. At my office I see people drink water bottle after water bottle and throw one after another into the trash. I find the lack of respect for our environment downright disturbing. Maybe it’s simply ignorance, but how is it possible that in today’s day and age one can conceivably be so disconnected as to how unnecessary disposable water bottles are becoming, but also the havoc they wreak on the world around them.

I am a resident of Orinda which is a beautiful community here in a relatively unspoiled part of the East Bay. I am also not one to keep my opinions to myself. I have voiced (politely) that my colleagues may find reusable water bottles a refreshing change from constantly throwing their plastic ones into the trash (despite the recycling bin being right next to the garbage can). I’ve also explained to them that the disposable plastics contain PCB’s or Polychlorinated biphenyls which are toxic and cancer causing.

It is almost amusing, were it not so sad, how they shrug off both their concern for recycling (some have explained to me that there are people who pick through the trash looking for the recyclables) while most of the others don’t seem to mind the thought of cancer. Maybe we need to think of water like cigarettes. If we’re consistently sucking back on something full of cancer causing agents, it might be a behavior we want to stop…. but hey, that’s just me.

There are a few who have expressed concern upon hearing this “shocking news” and have noted their need to make such changes. Of course, they don’t.

Of course, let’s not paint this recycling/trash picture to be a complete nightmare. Many of the folks in my office do recycle and I am not the only one who utilizes a recyclable bottle. I have noticed that it tends to be the younger and lower-waged employees who tend not to be so wasteful. I think, not only are they being raised with the importance of a green earth and recycling as a priority, but also their lower incomes help them appreciate making the most of what they have and not being so wasteful.

Recently Orinda and Moraga have enrolled in Recyclebank. I am a member, and I would encourage everybody to join. This great service helps motivate people to recycle through rewards and benefits our local schools. C’mon people. Let’s keep Orinda trash free. Recycle.
